Five Highlights from Autumn

by Alaina-

How are we already in December?

Seriously. It feels like a second ago that we were in July complaining about how fast this year as gone. But alas, December is here, chilly as ever, so I figured that I would recap my month and hopefully bring a little joy to your day. This fall has been e v e n t f u l to say the least. From my birthday (how am i 26 already?!), to Poland, to heart breaks, to new friends, I can’t being to explain how much this fall has changed my life. I religiously follow Anna from The Anna Edit, and her November highlights inspired this post. Needless to say, if you haven’t checked her out, please do so. She’s a gem. So, without further ado, here my five Autumn highlights:

Poland My birthday present to myself was a trip my my “motherland.” My great-grandparents on my Father’s side of the family were from Poland, and with a last name of Rogacki, you can’t get much more Polish than that. Growing up, polish customs and culture helped shaped who I am. One of my favorite traditions of my family is our kielbasa. Kielbasa is a type of sausage that originated in Poland/Eastern Europe, and every year, my Dad and his brothers make pounds and pounds and pounds of it for our family and friends. Funny enough, I don’t actually eat kielbasa, but the smell instantly transports me back to my youth. Moving on… Poland was one of, if not the, most beautiful place I’ve ever been and a blog post about my trip is coming soon

My Birthday You guys, I turned 26 this year. TWENTY SIX. I can’t believe it. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year to say it lightly. I’ve started a new role as a software developer and had to leave a team that i was very, very close to. I was only on my new team for a few weeks when my birthday rolled around, and the amount of love I got from my team was just overwhelming. Thank you to YOU all as well. Your emails and comments have been so kind.

New Friends I am introverted with a social anxiety disorder… So it’s super hard, if not painful, to make friends. I’m constantly worried about what I’m saying, how I say it, and what I’m going to say next. It’s honestly exhausting, so when I moved teams earlier this fall, I was nervous not only for my new career, but also the excruciating fear of making new friends. For my extroverted babes, I know this may seem a bit foreign, but for someone like me, this can be slightly debilitating. I have been SO lucky to be able to make a great crew that makes going to work that much better. Squeeze you friends a little tighter for me.

Christmas Preparations Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year, but it can get SO stressful I can proudly say that all of my Christmas gifts, from my family, to friends, to online secret santas (nerd alert, I know), are DONE. Although I haven’t wrapped anything, everything is finished… so now I think that means I can get myself a few, or more, gifts for myself right? I’m fairly certain that’s how it works.

My New Obsession Liz, if you’re reading this, sorry I’m not sorry. You know when you find a new band, or book series, or TV show, and you just being OBSESSED with it? I’m talking tunnel vision – don’t talk to me I’m watching my show obsessed? Well, I jumped on the Hamilton bandwagon and, well, it’s basically shaped my fall. I can’t tell you how many times I have listened to the soundtrack and the mix tape, read the Hamilton biography that inspired the show, read anything and everything that Lin-Manual as written and created… it’s been a LOT. It’s all I listened to when I was in Poland, and now when I listen to the musical, I think of my trip. If you are as into Hamilton as I am, leave your favorite Hamilton meme in the comments!

I’m a twenty something living in the heart of Detroit. I have an absurd fear of wasting my life away, so come with me as I travel the world and my own backyard.
